My favourite ever quote from a health professional

These people really need to sack their PR company.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6262347.stm

From the big news article today about the appetite-suppressing chewing gum, comes this doozy of a quote from lead researcher Professor Steve Bloom:

"We hit on the idea of a chewing gum because obese people like chewing."
    That's priceless.

And, as well as being funny, it strikes me as being a bit wrong. Isn't part of the problem a lack of chewing? Is my thinking outdated or is it the case that the more you chew each mouthful, the more quickly you feel full? I know it's stereotype and it may be a myth - however I have a splendid image in my head of that episode of the Simpsons (I think it's the Frank Grimes one in series 8) where it's shown that Homer never chews. I remember reading about the chewing thing in several places, often as a diet tip, so it's pretty common.

Feel free to debunk my possibly outdated logic, folks! And pass me another eclair.

    Teek

From my possibly out-dated knowledge. The process starts in the mouth with ptyalin and it was suggested that it operated a type of open loop control which pre-empted a satiated state rather wait for stomach distension to be the signal.
The enzyme breaks down starch so one wonders whether it overall would make a great impact.

OK, I might be lynched here, but I'm going to stick my neck out AGAIN!

Isn't part of the overeating problem not stopping when you are full?

I have a study which I don't have to hand but will go and look up later (darn hard copies!) which shows that before the age of three, children will stop eating when full regardless of the amount on their plate. After three, they will keep eating until the plate is empty.

There are some interesting conclusions in the study (which is about obesity in the USA) which I shall extract later and regurgitate.

Every fat person I have watched eating eats quickly. This is not to say that every thin person I have watched eating eats slowly!I am thin and masticate regularly!
