    A little skeptical poser.

Looking at a take-away menu, me, the mrs, and a couple of friends were deciding what to have for tea.

    On the menu we saw:

    1x 10" pizza - £4.50

    1x 18" pizza - £10.00

So, what should a couple do. Buy one large pizza and share or buy 2 small ones?

on a similar note (and teek can attest to this)

Pizza Express have a pizza called the American (a margherita with pepperoni) priced at £7.45
However, their plain margherta is £5.25 and if you add a topping of pepperoni for £1.45, you end up with a pizza costing £6.70.

The exact same pizza 75p cheaper.

I used to experiment in how to get my double pepperoni pizza cheapest, whether I should 'create my own' or whatever.

Luckily my fave local pizza delivery has revamped their menu to be perfection for me.

My only quandry now is do I 'buy one, get one free' which seems like you are getting more for your money, but I end up having pizza the next day as well then and feel like a pig!:o

-So in summary, it would depend if they have the 'buy one get one free' option, look to the deals, they are the best way to order pizza for more than one person.

P.S. I can do the maths involved in your question as well :) I just think you need to factor in whether the deals are even better value. If it's anything like my takeaway pizza no.2's price is because it's possible to get it as buy one, get one free and get more for your money if you can handle being a pig. You see I've done this before And far too much last week :o

Based purely on calculations of surface area, stick with the 18", John.
Triple the surface area at just over double the price!

If you're paying more than £2 for a pizza you're doing something wrong anyway.

Selly Oak. Not only are they cheap, but they are also the best pizzas ever.

I thought this was a neat little problem which illustrates the psychological error of 'framing' - where we see things and make decisions, solve problems etc. about things in the context that they have been framed.

I think most people would see the question and quickly come to the conclusion that buying two 10" pizzas is better value than buying one 18" pizza as you get an extra 2" and save a pound.

The trap is thinking of the amount of pizza we get in terms of inches. Pizzas are circular and the amount we get is dependent on its area.

The area of the pizza is given by pi*radius2. Working out the problem reveals that the 18" pizza is not only much larger, but it's also better value.

I wonder how many people buy two 10" pizzas rather than one 18" pizza thinking they're getting a better deal? If they do that, it's the retailer who's quids in!!

Using a trick like this could be a clever way of maximising profits for a savvy retailer.

well that is too clever 4 me I would just think one with a bigger diameter is bigger :)

Mind you if you went for the two smaller ones you would get more crust, and crust is sort of the lame bit:)

    John you nerd :D

If you want good, cheap pizza, you can't get better than the £2.99 Iranian pizza place in Moseley. Flipping awesome.

Haven't tried the Selly Oak pizza, is it as good as the fry ups from the Selly Sausage?

I would need to find the cheapest delivery one though, cos I live in the back of beyond :) the £8.70 I pay for two twelve inch pizzas isn't bad. Shocking how naughty-but-nice food is becoming cheaper :) :o

I've never understood why everyone likes the Sausage so much, it's really not that great. Luciano's and Mama Wia are much better. And they do buy 4 get one free.

I was soooo pleased with myself when I spotted the mistake too.

Now, convincing someone that getting 2" less than they expected is a good thing, could come in handy elsewhere!! :D
