    Pope and condoms

A shift in the right direction.

The Pope said their use might be justified on a case by case basis to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids.
Rather little rather late and the begrudging tone of disapproval stinks....

This intrigues me. The Pope seems to be very strong on the church doctrine, which includes the Doctrine of Papal Infallibility. Which says that Popes never make any mistakes, since they are relaying the Word of God.

But only a few months ago he was still saying that condoms were bad, and couldn't stop AIDS.

So was he being infallible then, or is he infallible now, and how are two opposed infallibilities to be reconciled?

You will be delighted to know that the pope is not ordinarily infallible. Though from outside it is very difficult to differentiate teachings that he has decided are infallible from those he can revise.

In July 2005 Pope Benedict XVI asserted during an impromptu address to priests in Aosta that: "The Pope is not an oracle; he is infallible in very rare situations, as we know."[11]

Might that be translated as "I am infallible unless I decide otherwise"?

He is supposedly infallible when speaking ex cathedra. Such pronoucements are obviously risky, putting the notion of papal infallibility to the test and so they are incredibly rare.

Damn, Wanted to get the first shot at the condom story (sorry for the possiblly less than appropriate pun, but I just could not think of a better way to express it).

Anyhow, marvellous. The word of some god, communicated by some bloke in dodgy tranny gear, can in fact change over time.

Even god can learn from his mistakes.....??? Sorry, my brain is getting scrambled by the whole, "This is the will of god", and the contradictory position "We cannot know the mind of god" way in which these charlatans make it up as they go along get out of jail free card approach to truth.

But, this has to be a major crack in the edifice. Remember the small gap that appeared in the dyke. Perhaps all those abused children have indeed suffered in a good cause (though would never have wished it that way meself!). Are we seeing the tentative beginnings of the final breakdown of Western christianity. What with the Church of Waffle (Sorry, England, tearing itself apart over women - don't all men have enough dealing with women, let alone finding another fight to pick with them over religion? JUST KIDDING!!!)

Am I being over optimistic. Possibly on timescale, but surely this is a significant break (let's just hope the coondoms don't!)

Bye bye Miss Italian Pie (in the sky)

Did you really mean to put those two comments together?

Perhaps not! No intentional juxtapositioning I assure you. However, wouldn't it be luvverly (copywright Lionel Bart) if churcjes could admit that they are staffed by quite a few of our homosexual brethren (poss. attr. Sacha Baron Cohen?)

And that it ain't really all that bad to do what they do when all around there are so much worse horrors befalling man than a bit of anal intrusion or fanny fiddling.
