This is not quite correct as plurals can be used in another way in Hebrew - the plural here is used to indicate greatness or importance. Elohim (the word used) is combined with the singular, bara (to create - and only used with god as the subject) showing that a singular god is intended. I'm not sure the translations are that far out really. From Genesis 1:1 we read 'God, plus heaven and earth' created.
But from the Hebrew Lexicon in Strong's Concordance we find that the word "God" actually means 'gods in the ordinary sense'; heaven = sky; and earth = partitively 'a land'.
The point with this thread is that we would not persuade fundies to change their mind even if we could get the great Mo to come and tell them! I think we understand quite a lot of the origins of the OT myths - mostly from Babylonian stuff - but it won't shake any believer.
The only way one might talk a believer out of his faith is if one could show the basis for the belief in the inerrancy of the bible was wrong - and the bible does not even claim this! I suspect it is as hard as getting a crack cocaine addict to give up his habit by talking alone - it just isn't going to happen.
