    So now we know...it was just a move in the new contract negotiations. It's not something we see very often in the UK but United's US owners will be familiar with the ploy.

    The newspapers are speculating the contract is worth up to £200,000 a week.

    Against the background of the massive cuts in benefits and jobs announced this week, it's nice to hear of someone being rescued from poverty by a generous employer.

    Rooney had better put in a long string of match-winning performances to justify that salary. If his recent (lack of) form continues I suspect that the fans will crucify him.
