Am I the only one here who has a bit of a fetish about this? I have a long line to the BT exchange, and I get, at most 4Mbps on a service that offers "up to" 20Mbps".
My exchange now offers FTTC (fibre to the cabinet), which BT says offers faster download speeds. But because I am a long way from the exchange, I am unable to be part of the faster service.

I think I may have a wee problem

This is what FTTC can give you.
Not me unfortunately. In order to get BT to connect me to fibre, my line must be able to support at least 15 Mbps. Mine will only support up to 12.2 Mbps. So if you already have a fast connection, you can get a faster one, but if your line is long and connection slow, you are stuck until BT offer FTTH (fibre to the home) in 50 years or so.
(Well, only slight exaggeration.)
This is my latest test.

Virgin not available in your area? I regularly get the advertised upload/download speeds, even during peak periods, and it's not too expensive.
I think the cable was connected about 20 years ago when it was NTL. And Virgin's reputation for not-great customer service puts me off.

Then there is this chart.

This is what I'm getting at the moment with up to 20 MPS...
To be honest, I've found the service pretty good, certainly compared to BT. No cap, for one thing.
YMMV
