    "They only need love"

    [venting]

Bah - Happy clappy xians >:(

Brief back story, last Wednesday (11th) we got broken into and burgled with the little feckers getting away with a few portable, high value items. Yesterday (16th) the scrotes came back to try and clear out the bulkier stuff. Luckily three doors down spotted them outside and shouted at them causing them to drop the bulky stuff and leg it.

My next door neighbours, for the most part, are fantastic. They're not too bothered about loud music, generally good people and we have enough in common that we're often round each others houses chatting or swapping DVDs etc.

Yesterday though (already quite pissed off, as you can imagine) I was round there chatting, thanking them for calling us and giving witness statements and borrowing their internet because my computer was in a state of limbo waiting for SOCO to turn up when we got around to talking about the bastards, how screwed the laws are in this country and what they deserved (10 minutes alone and I'm allowed to use this puppy if you're interested) ... I was bowled over when she said "They only need love"...

This is when she could identify the people who did it, knows that the entire, five kid, family are habitual thieves, drug addicts and\or alcoholics (fairly typical Chavs) who are always 'under suspicion' of petty misdemeanors or mindless law-breaking and always get away with wrist-slaps or cautions. I was just amazed that anyone can have their head so far in the clouds to think that 'love' is all that's needed to fix these toe-rags*.

I'm going to leave it here, before I just degenerate into streams of expletives, and grab a beer. I apologise now for any typos or poor grammar but I'm a tad distracted at the moment

Ouch! >:( I know how you feel, as The Midden has been broken into more than once. And I sympathize with your notions on deterrence: if I'd caught the buggers in the act, I'd have been using them to test Haldane's ideas On Being The Right Size.

Still, in your case it sounds as if the police know where to make inquiries, so there is some chance of justice being done.

As for " love is all they need", perhaps it isn't religion so much as pseudoscience, as your neighbour's husband seems to have seen. Just a thought!

    Best wishes.

Having read "The Policemans Blog" I'm not holding my breath.

Proper response tomorrow when I'm fully awake

    And thank you :)

    They only need love? Bless.

I am afraid that my position is a liitle more radical.

The answer on this possibly lies in social eugenics. Having multiple children from multiple partners is a fairly good reason for compulsory sterilisation, methinks. :)

If a person develops a malignant tumour then surgeons excise the offending tissue.

    Ditto that for society.

I think I may have been a Dalek in a former life ???

Perhaps she meant to say "they only needed love" - that is, if they'd been born into a loving, decent home, they probably wouldn't have grown up into thugs.

However, given that that didn't happen, suggesting that 'love' would be an effective way of changing or punishing them is niave and stupid.

Wait til it's her place that's burgled.

Finally got a chance to write ramble a quick reply now, sorry for the delay

Teek - I'd go with naive and maybe a bit of Xian happy clappiness, she's not stupid by any means and has to juggle two kids whilst working. She is infected by that permanent optimism though :P But no - I don't wish burglary on anyone though, it's not a nice experience.

Median - Yah, I think to paraphrase Dogbert "It should need a little more than the practical exam..."

Personally I've always been in favour of the Singapore system. No crap, just potential pain (good teacher), public humiliation and no-faffing prison time. Whilst most of the Western world calls it barbaric they also have a stupendously low crime rate.

Finishing with a quote from Sir Robert Peel and whimpering at the state of the modern justice system...
