    ME: a new conspiracy theory?

Is this just stupidity or an attempt to creat a new conspiracy theory?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11465723

A spokeswoman from NHS Blood and Transplant said: "Currently there is no epidemiological evidence of a link between XMRV and CFS in the UK."

Although the evidence is patchy, the ME Association say it is enough to advise caution and recommend a ban on blood donations from ME patients.

Looking at pubmed, there have been reports of blood borne transmission of ME nor of problems related to transfusion. However there are widespread claims of worsening of ME related to activity or increased metabolic demands. It would seem much more likely that the transfusion service is simply acting to prevent future legal claims.

The ways of the transfusion service are mysterious and wasteful.

They won't take my blood because they gave me some blood in the 1980s. Even though I was in and out of hospital for most of last year and now know that I'm clear of all the things that they thought they might have given me, they still won't take my blood.

Q1: Did we give you blood in the 1980s? "Yes, but..." No buts, piss off!

My wife moved jobs 8 years ago but still gets bombarded with letters and phone calls asking her to give blood in an area she no longer works anywhere near. Attempts to get them to save themselves money result in a flurry of "don't stop giving blood" letters and then back to wastage as normal.

In the 1980s hepatitis c, let alone d were unknown, so they learned the hard way that prior transfusion was a risk factor for blood borne diseases. They are still worrying about prion related diseases etc. I suspect they will never get to the point of being sufficiently reassured that there are no further blood borne diseases to worry about.

As for the rest - well... idiots.

    Yes but.

What are the chances that I'm carrying a prion disease (BSE/CJD/whatever) compared to some other person who was alive in the 1980s? I had one blood transfusion in the 1980s, was a vegetarian for most of the decade, didn't have gay sex, didn't share needles, etc, etc. Someone else may have been eating raw meat, in more ways than one, in the 80s, but didn't have a blood transfusion then and is allowed to give blood now. I'm not at all convinced that this is playing the probabilities wisely.

Probability and risk adversity - not bedfellows.
