I know at least one atheist Religious Education teacher!
IMO there is a good case for RE teachers to be agnostic rather than religious or atheist. That way they should be more likely to give an objective and unbiased view.
I applaud your tolerance. I can't understand how someone can teach scientific method by day and yet pray at night. The very idea bothers me.
I had a great RE teacher for a while. Very much a believer but very open to debate and ideas. His lessons were always enjoyable (even if I was endlessly told to shut up!) and I would have taken RE as an option if there was the slightest hint that an examination pass in it was worthwhile.
