Possibly the most succinct news report so far.

Yes, he does seem to have strayed from the 'truth' in order to make his political point. But I do not sense there is any appetite in the media for stating this loud and clear.
Where is the Sun/Mail/Express campaign to prevent this paedophile fellow traveller from spreading the lie that christian beliefs were not pivotal to making the holocaust a success (from Hilter's viewpoint)? Too complex a message perhaps.
I rather like this.
It may have been a stunt, but I think a necessary one.

Protest the Pope rally sees 10,000 march through London's streets
Although a good-natured crowd, the force of feeling against the presence of Pope Benedict in the UK was clear in the messages condemning his stance on homosexuality, the use of condoms, segregated schools, women's rights and, most of all, the child abuse scandal for which so many hold the pontiff personally responsible for both accelerating it and then covering it up.
Richard Dawkins not pulling punches at Protest the Pope March.
I watched a lot of that coverage over the weekend in awe, especially interviews with pilgrims. Is this really the 21st century? I also thought at times it showed signs of mass hysteria/delusion in the adoration that was being shown to a cult leader - and despite the best efforts of the media, there weren't really that many more people who turned up to the events than if Rod Stewart was doing a few live shows across the country.
Do they not have bits in the bible about worshiping idols or just cos the pope is God's messenger on earth, are the faitful allowed to get a bit wet in the pants when he appears in his ice cream van?
But franklly, the most absurd thing I saw on the television was on Sunday morning when Sky news were doing a live feed from Lourdes (yes, me too!?!?), and they interviewed one woman about the pools where you can go and dip in the same water that comes from the spring, and she stated when you come out of the water, you aren't wet and that is a miracle in itself.Another guy tried to state that there are miracles happening there because each one is thorougly investigated and proven.
I did come away from the weekend thinking a lot less of my religious brothers - what sort of delusion must you be under to really not see all this catholicism for what it is - a complete nonsense.
To be fair, it is a pretty self-selecting bunch of believers - largely a subset of the subset of Catholics who really take the pope seriously.
Likewise at Lourdes, you're pretty likely to get the devout and the desperate, and maybe more mainstream people who are humouring one or the other.
If you think about something like monarchy, there are kids who don't really understand constitutional politics who'll get all excited about one or other Royal visiting their town because they've been told the person is special.
That doesn't require much in the way of belief, it just seems to be the nature of many humans, and many don't grow out of it, even when the target of their affection is some mediocre soap celebrity.
In the case of someone like the pope, even leaving religious doctrine, etc as such aside, presumably many people are encouraged not to grow out of their childlike admiration, the same way that supermarket-checkout magazines encourage people to keep pretending that celebrities actually matter.
More child abuse claims, this time from East Yorkshire.

There's an excellent analysis of the activities of the catholic church following the exposure of child abuse within its ranks, by Geoffrey Robertson QC in his book The Case of the Pope, just published.
In it, he looks at how Canon Law, specifically in the requirements of the Crimen Sollicitationis, ensures total secrecy of any and all enquiries into child abuse within the church, on pain of excommunication. The Crimen itself was only made public because it was leaked to prosecutors in the US in 2003.
Robertson also analyses the Vatican claims to statehood and how it's used to get immunity. For anyone interested in a bit more detail, I've reviewed the book on blogcritics.org here.
