Thread: Broccoli YUK!!!

    Broccoli YUK!!!

    I hate it.

Could someone please shoot down this scandalous piece of non-research so that my wife will stop saying "See - told you. Eat your broccoli"

The chemical called sulforaphane seems to counteract a fault with the gene called PTEN which is involved in prostate cancer.
The gene normally stops cancer from developing but in certain cells it is missing and this is when the disease can begin. However sulforaphane seems to dampen the effect of these cells that are missing PTEN and prevent them from triggering cancer growth.

Can't stand the stuff but it seems they have a documented link between the food and the proposed effect and have now added a plausible mechanism.

Only thing I can offer is that the proposed active ingredient is found in other, cruciferous vegetables. Not a great consolation if, like me, you can't stand any of that family.

Now then... anything is improved with cheese sauce. Perhaps if she completely covers it it might be bearable.

I hated broccoli when I was a kid, but then I hated cabbage and sprouts and cauliflower and lots of other things.
About 20 years ago I started growing it in my garden and now I love the stuff, especially the purple-sprouting variety.

I read somewhere that even though broccoli and carrots are individually good for you, some study had established that the goodness is enhanced when they are eaten together.
(No references, I probably read it on the back of a box of Englands Glory).

Still feel like throwing out at the thought of cauliflower though.
And I mean throwing out, not up, such is the loathing. I can't even bear to look at a cauliflower.

I dislike broccoli, but hate its cousin cauliflower.(the cooking smell!Yuck!) I avoid vegetables I need to smother with a sauce to make palatable.

I will eat broccoli,in season when it's cheap,at around $2 a kg (about 40p a pound.) Cut into very small rosettes and steamed. Also makes me feel virtuous. You know, like reycling household waste, even though I suspect, deep down, it's mostly bullshit.

Tangent : On a recent tabloid TV programme it was claimed that contary to common belief, carrots are NOT good for our eyes, and may in fact contribute to macular degneration.

Tonight our country's leading experts on the cutting edge treatment reversing blindness and the foods you should eat to keep your sight...Professor Paul Beaumont, "Everyone I've told not to eat too many carrots has been amazed many of them were having a glass of carrot juice a day thinking they were slowing down their macular degeneration and they're horrified to learn that the studies suggest that probably not so" says Professor Beaumont.
Fascinating if true, but considerng the source,I'm not entirely convinced.

I have become increasingly skeptical about claims for foods (good and bad) since these are rebutted by subsequent research as often as they are made. The conclusion I have come to is that as long as we eat a sensible variety of food, with nothing to excess, our bodies will mostly cope fairly well.

While certain foods might reduce the probability of certain types of illness by a small percentage (overall, that is: even a 50% improvement might mean that your chance of suffering the illness might be decreased from 0.04 to 0.02%, to give a hypothetical example), its practical effect on longevity is likely to be minor. The one certainty is that something will get all of us in the end, so eat, drink and be merry!
