    POLL: Election Debate

Tonight was the election debate between the Lib Dems, Tories and Labour.
For those who didn't see it then get yourself on the old intertubes and watch.

So, who came out the winner, you decide.

    For me:

David Cameron takes away the prize for EPIC FAIL.
Gordon Brown comes a close second to old Dave with a FAIL.
    Nick Clegg pwned them both.

I will declare that I will probably vote LibDem, but the LibDem's can actually promise that they will colonise Mars within 6 months, knowing that there is sod all chance they will be in a position to be proven truthful or misleading.

Can I pick which cheese I can vote for?

Yes, you may. I had a rather nice creamy Lancashire (I think, dont have the packet here to check) with caramelised onion. Hmmm yum. It was an extra special treat since I suspect I'm lactose intolerant and cutting out on dairy knocks my acid reflux down from a constant all day battle to a once or twice a week occurrence. Damn my faulty genes.

Cheese I'm afraid. It was on in the corner of the room but I didn't watch it. I listened with one ear, merely turning round every few minutes to shout "you twat" at the screen - a reaction I usually reserve for Jeremy Kyle.

    Sat through it all.
    Totally agree with your verdict.
    Cameron was awful, unpleasantly so.
Was surprised how well Clegg came across. He may find the next debate more challenging now that he's shown his hand as it were....

    Re: POLL: Election Debate

Clegg seemed the most comfortable and handled it best (although he did keep repeating points). I thought that Brown did better than I expected. The loser was definitely Cameron IMO since he looked tense and uncomfortable throughout and, amazingly, seemed more on the defensive than Brown.

I agree that Clegg is likely to come under much more pressure in the next two rounds. However, the other two can't afford to be too nasty as they are wooing the Lib Dem voters (and maybe Clegg himself if there's a hung parliament).

Of course, that leaves aside whether or not such a debate really reveals the qualities we need in a leader, or merely the smoothest TV operator. I don't doubt that Blair would have romped through a debate like this and wiped the floor with the others, but that's no recommendation...

Clegg came across best as he did tonight, although slightly less so but i disagree with 2 of their policies quite a lot so I still wouldnt vote for him. Frankly apart from not voting Labour I have no idea who I will vote for.

The exit poll (yougov?) showed Cameron ahead but not by much. I watched a bit of it this time but was still not able to judge between the leaders. I think I'm coming round to Clegg (I was with Cameron) as I believe he is a self confessed atheist.

    But then again

The Liberal Democrat leader, who was criticised by David Cameron for his "holier-than-thou" attitude in the first of the televised leaders' debates, has written an article for The Church of England Newspaper in which he claims that Christian values are "central" to his policies.

I thought it was very even this time; on performance alone, I would give all three 8 out of 10. With that out of the way, perhaps the analysis of the last debate will focus more on substance than style.

During the debate Clegg did say that he was not religious (or words to that effect), but that is not incompatible with stating that his moral values are shared with Christianity. In fact, there is growing evidence that moral values developed as a result of the pressures of living in society (and have been observed in intelligent social animals as well as humans). Religion merely adopted and codified them.

He did say he is not a believer: but he also said he is bringing his children up catholic. I suppose it is really difficult to try to appeal to a wide range of voters and this was a reasonably neat way out of the problem; but I was disappointed

I thought he said his catholic wife was bringing up their children as catholics...

Well you are right I suppose: but I thought it was a good idea for two parents to bring up kids

Maybe it is a 50-50 split. They get to be catholics the first bit of their lives and then turn to being
    not-people-of-faith....*

Also re Gordon Brown's statement that he was "of the Presbyterian Faith"- since when did being a Presbyterian get to be a religion on its own? (even in Scotland...)

*(at least I have observed that's usually how these things pan out...)
