    @polomint
    I totally agree with his point about failing to recognise talents and discouraging non-academic education, when I was really young my goal in life was to become an astronaut but of couse according to my parents I was better off as an accountant or a doctor.

    But ironically this eventually led to my interest in the guitar, which was also shot down as silly distraction. :(

    I suspect there are MANY similar stories being told in the comments section of that video.

    I did a highly scientific study amongst some mates in the pub over the weekend. It seems most had a similar experience at school.....
    In my case I did go back to what I always knew I wanted to do. I could have done without the misery of being forced to take "sensible" lessons where I struggled, rather than lessons I would have enjoyed.

    I'd suggest picking up that guitar again! It's never too late to enjoy a "silly distraction"!

    I was told by a careers advisor that I would be great in 'management services' (advice which I ignored). This was because I had 'general talents' rather than being good at anything in particular. That was a long time ago. There is no call whatever for 'generalists' at all these days as jobs become ever more specialised. Perhaps I should have been a teacher or a careers advisor.
