I recall reading an interview with a stand-up comedian (I forget his name) some years back, who had just completed a world tour. He said that it had generally been a huge success, with Australians in particular rolling in the aisles, but in some parts of the USA he had bombed. They just stared blankly at his best jokes, and simply didn't get them. Which is perhaps why so many US TV comedies have canned laughter - so the audience knows when there's a joke...
