    A BSc in Acupuncture???

I thought that sort of thing had been stopped!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...upuncture.html

The article is pretty run-of-the-mill but some of the comments .....

    e.g.

She needs to clean up her act and stop taking allopathic medication before she takes on the role of a therapist. However, studying acupuncture is a positive step.

As to why a degree in acupuncture, all complementary therapists are now required to obtain recognised qualifications and that is an excellent step in the right direction.

No. The University of Westminster is still running its BSc in Acupuncture and a lot of the other private acupuncture schools are linked to various other universities. The LCTA is linked to the University of Portsmouth and the College in Reading is linked to the University of Kingston. One other is also linked to Oxford Brookes I think. So, no, the acupuncture degrees are far from gone.

I am ashamed to say that this is my old University. Perhaps I should write to them as a graduate of the University and ask what they are playing at?

All the osteopathy qualifications have been degrees for well over a decade - BScOSt, BOst and now MScOst. New degree course starting in Swansea Uni next September, think they are calling it a MOst.

davidrodway, forgive me if this question has been answered before, but isn't osteopathy without the magic pretty much the same thing as physiotherapy?

dont want to divert this thread froim its original topiuc - there is already Osteopaths on the Loose for discussing osteopathy but as you ask. I assuime you mean "magic" in a bad way, not a good way. A good way would mean, for example, osteopaths have been manipulating for over 100 years, are trained in it from the start, use a wide range of techniques, have excellent palpatory skills. I dont really think we are "magical" in the sense of being woo are having daft theories about physiology or anatomy,

Differences between physios and osteopaths have been discuused before, but basiucally physios use machines and exercises and some train in manual thechniques as well. Osteopaths just do manual stuff. Physio is perhaps wider - eg post op rehab, work with stroke victimds, wheras osteopaths are mainly musculo-skeletal. Most physios work in hospital under the doctors wheras osteopaths work in private practice and are always primary care practioners - ie have the skills to decide which are suitable cases to take on.

The problem I have is the Bachelor of Science part.

You could study acupuncture, or indeed any CAM, on the basis of it's origins, it's history, it's belief systems etc and on that basis it could be considered an academic pursuit. Whatever acupuncture is however, it is not science.

There is a friend of mine who blogs as Majikthyse who has been very active in this area.

I agree with you. Seeing as the original quote was from the Mail I thought I had better check its validity:

    Here is the Reading/Kingston site:

A degree in homoeopathy is a real degree, just very, very, very, very watered down. A degree in acupuncture is surely a real degree, just with many, many, many holes in it.

Ok - off to play Scrabble now!
