This could be interesting...
ETA: Title should probably be "Derren Brown will attempt to predict lottery numbers"

Prize of 1p for a pound paid after everyone takes the same six numbers![]()
Could this one backfire then?
Of course its a trick, but lots of people believe he does something more sophisticated than other magicians.
People will be rightly cynical, and unless he does something spectacular, he might start heading in the same direction as Blaine in the public's opinion.
Seren loaned me his book several months ago - perhaps he has written more than one, I don't know. He comes across as having a very good opinion of himself, but I expect most performers/entertainers do.
Yes, he might come a cropper, but I think it is more likely that he knows exactly what he is doing. It is his living, after all.

He gives false explanations for his feats and people fall for them - including some (self-proclaimed) skeptics!
.
Am I missing something here? If Darren Brown could really predict the Lottery numbers then why do this stunt and not just win the Lottery and retire?
It's a bit like the person selling "lucky heather". If it's so lucky then why is someone with so much of it, having to sell heather for a living.
There has to be some critical thinking technical term for this - anyone?

I haven't seen a clear explanation of what he is going to do, and that's not a surprise as he won't want us to be able to think about it in advance.
One possibility is that the lottery draw is shown on a slightly delayed transmission and he is going to make his prediction seconds after the actual draw but seconds before it is broadcast? Another possibility is a variation of his betting on horses trick, with lots of punters with lots of different number combinations. Might be something completely different.
His tricks are usually pretty impressive (as you'd expect from a Croydonian). I doubt that he'd be doing this if we weren't going to be bemused and arguing about how he did it.
The reveal-all programme will be on Friday so we'll have 48 hours to discuss afterwards. He wouldn't be doing that if it was going to be lame and obvious would he?
I think I've mentioned before that I have an in-law who believes Derren has "real" powers. She'll be disappointed by anything less than a clear prediction of all 6 numbers and will ignore any rational explanation given on the Friday programme.
I like Derren and I only have a very basic working knowledge of what stage magicians do, but I can still work out (or at least put forward a rataional explanation) how he does a lot of his tricks in his stage show. Although there is always something he does that completely baffles me.
I think his most valuable attribute is his skill at misdirection, and I also think that once people start to cotton on to what he does, he is at risk of losing his 'magic'. However I can see why he has to keep going for the spectacular such as this, thats the nature of the game.
I'm certainly intrigued to see what he is planning.
Derren has written 3 books. I have his first, Absolute Magic, and found it was quite pretentious in places. From memory the book is about the way magic is performed (e.g. showmanship) and is aimed more at magicians themselves I think.
His other 2 are Pure Effect and Tricks of the Mind but I have not read either of these.
Lately he seems to be trying to do "bigger and bigger" tricks - I wish he would go back to his small, neat, how'd he do that? kind of tricks that he did in earlier series.
Dear Mr Cumber,
It was "Tricks of the Mind" that I read. I should have done some searching. Oh, and sorry if I pinched your joke on another thread.
More importantly, did Derren actually predict the numbers - does anyone know?
Ah, the Mail seems to be impressed.
