    Does the world need men?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8142104.stm

Soon, men may no longer be needed for reproduction. So is there a point to them any more? As a man, my defence would be that a world without men would be less funny and a little duller (no offence to women!).

Have you noticed how, in many recent TV dramas and comedies, women are generally portrayed as sensible, caring, mature and intelligent. Men aren't! Are the script writers trying to make a point or just observing life as it really is?

One could suppose that if heads of state didn't need to advertise the size of their manhood, competition between countries for the largest missiles etc would diminish.

My wife said to me "what would I do without you dear"?

I am beginning to rethink what she really meant!

I get the feeling that the script writers may be following the fashion rather than trying to make any great statement. If they wrote in a female blonde scatter brain character, by today's standards it would be trite stereotypical behaviour (perhaps rightly so). On the other hand I am not aware of a sitcom with the main character as someone disabled. Perhaps this will come.

    Jasper Carrott's "All about Me"

Although Jasper was the star, the narrative is from the perspective of his step son who has cerebral palsy.

    - you know as soon as I posted it, I thought I bet someone proves me wrong. But you have to admit it's not commonplace.

Oh yes, the old ones are the best

Completely off topic - I have a plane to catch back to the UK for a week. Oh, home to the motherland. If I vanish from the forum again then you know I was transferred to Air France. (Come to think of it, that's not funny).

Re: Does the world need men?

The age old question do women need men, the answer is Yes. Who else would you have to feel superior to if not a man?

Who else would you torture with the question “Does my bum look big in this?”

Who else would put up with the silent treatment and the pout even when they know they are right and will say sorry anyway.

Who else can you complain about not understanding you when you secretly don’t want to be understood? 8)

Who else can you get to beg you for a favour if not a men who!

So do women need men, yes.

Even cats like to torment dogs now and a gain.

Well, someone at "The Times" has come up with 101 uses for men. I couldn't really be bothered reading it.................

I reckon the world would be duller without men or women, the mix works for me!

I wouldn't want to be a fella, I have less freedom in terms of time but far more in terms of who I can be and what I can say, not to mention decisions about reproduction!

OK they've sussed the sperm thing. We must keep the shelf conspiracy a secret from them. If they find out that every time they ask us to put up shelves we put them out of their reach so that theystill need us to get stuff we're done for.

The point and the observation are the same:I think the writers are focusing on inter-personal relationships based on male detachment in all matters except sexual...and the underlying discontent of males in the alienating domestic environments they find themselves in.
