Framing.
If we come across a set of instructions like these:
- Don’t try to do them all at once.
- Sort them into piles.
- Do the small ones then the big ones.
- Doing too many at a time will reduce the performance.
- It can be completed in one morning.
We have no problem in understanding them. Where we would have a problem is in understanding what they are about. Unless you know the context to which they apply they are pretty much meaningless.
If you are made aware that the instructions are for a new bank clerk who has to sort out small coinage then the instructions suddenly make sense! Then again, if you’re told that these are a wife’s instructions for her husband to do the washing while she’s away then they might also make sense! (Not that men would need instructions for so simple a task).
The lesson here is that we can interpret exactly the same set of instructions (or questions, decision-making, etc.) in different ways depending upon how the scene is set – i.e. how the issue is ‘framed’ (context set, frame of reference).
Of course, things normally work the other way round. We often have a framework established before we interpret instructions or consider questions. For example:Frame 1
Psychics can act as mediums passing on messages from the dead. The contact channel they make isn’t always clear therefore the words or images they receive can be ambiguous; so psychics can only pass on what they receive. This information will not have any meaning for the psychic; it will only have meaning for the sitter: the intended recipient. This means that the information passed on by the psychic has no particular meaning until or unless the recipient confirms it, as this is the only person to whom it has meaning.Frame 2Now, here’s a quick (made up) snippet of a psychic reading…
Cold Reading is a set of techniques used to give the illusion to people that you know more about them than you really do. People claiming to be psychic often use it. People have a strong tendency to accept things they already believe and also to strongly personalise very vague information given to them (subjective validation). Cold Readers use these predilections in people by giving them vague and generalised statements knowing full well that the sitter will take them as being very specific after personalising the message and applying their own meaning to it.
Psychic: I have an elderly gentleman here with me. I’m getting the grey hair and he would have died of a chest condition, possibly a heart condition.And so on…
Sitter: Yes, my father died of a heart attack.
Psychic: I’m also getting a uniform of some kind. Your father would have worn a uniform at some time.
Sitter: Yes, he was in the army during the war.
Psychic: I’m also getting a problem with a limb, possibly a leg injury.
Sitter: He fell and broke his hip 3 years before he died and it gave him a lot of pain.
So, what do we have here?
Is this a case of the dead father coming through the medium and passing small pieces of information that confirm it is indeed him or is it someone cold reading and offering very vague and ambiguous phrases and the sitter is filling in all of the meaning based on her own knowledge?
Well this is where ‘framing’ comes into it. If you believe in this sort of thing and you’re interpreting this through Frame1 then it will probably look very convincing. However, if you don’t believe this and you know what cold reading is (Frame 2) then you will interpret the reading completely differently.
The point is that depending on your frame of reference, you will judge exactly the same words in one of two different ways.
Framing is quite a broad concept and is important in many instances (give a person the choice of a potentially life-changing operation and whether you tell them there’s a 93% survival rate or a 7% morbidity rate it will actually result in different levels of acceptance – even though the 2 bits of information have identical meaning!), but it’s often overlooked when it comes to things like interpreting psychic readings.
Understanding framing helps you to see the other person’s point of view. Always important with critical thinking about things.
