I am not a microbiologist - but I know someone who is - so does staining bacteria kill them? I do not understand what the purpose would be.

Staining does kill bacteria, but as Dr Oldfield will know, there have been methods of looking at them in detail for many years, without staining.

We have two separate issues here, I think. There was a new imaging technique reported recently which has promise to allow optical imaging of things which would previously have had to be fixed (i.e. killed) and placed in an electron microscope. I think it was something to do with progress in producing materials with negative refractive indices at optical wavelengths (it has been done with microwaves - see various gee-whiz reports about invisibility cloaks). I'm not aware of any practical imaging device existing yet, but I could be wrong.

All of this has nothing to do with any nonsense about crystal life forms or mystic energy fields.
