    Dave glimour - great!

Is Dave Gilmour underated? I think he is ace - but he often seems to be over-looked in the media relative to other UK guitarists (i.e., Clapton / Beck / Page)

Who's this Dave Glimour? Was he with Pnik Foyld?

On the other hand, bet that Dave Gilmour is happy with his bank statement any time he cares to take a look though! He was on Later with Jools a few weeks back and did an old Floyd number in tribute to their keyboard player (I think) who died the previous week. Seems like a well together guy and probably doesn't bother him too much if he doesn't get the same sort of attention as the other three you mention. And yes, he is fairly competent.

Dave Gilmour seems to appear on just about every programme about guitars and guitarists - most recently Alan Yentob's series. Didn't he also have a big concert on BBC4 recently?

I don't think he's really suffering from any lack of exposure.

David "don't call me Dave" Gilmour was/is? Pink Floyds lead guitarist and has, shall we say, a modicum of talent...he is famous for giving a lot of his money to charity, although I can't remember which one.

It was indeed the Floyds keyboard player Rick Wright that played his last the other week, which is a bit of a sod as that now guarantees no reunion gig (Sid Barrett didn't count).

He may indeed be under-rated but his fans appreciate him...

Talk about 'damned with faint praise'!

I love Dave Gilmour's guitaristry - he's not a flashy player, and has never gone in for overly-technical, fretw*nking histrionics, and maybe that's why he gets a little overlooked. I think he's great at the melancholy, bluesy stuff, and he's a terrific songwriter.

That four-note riff at the start of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, for example - so simple, anyone could play it, but it's instantly recognisable and absolutely classic.

[FONT="Book Antiqua"]The solos on 'Comfortably Numb' are exquisite.
Incidentally I went to see Perfect Alibi, a Floyd tribute band a few weeks ago.
If anyone is a Floyd fan here, I suggest you go and see them. The pyrotechnics and light show were commendable. However, the music and vocals were uncannily accurate. Even down to doing the vocal stuff on guitar on 'Pigs'.

He was more gifted at partaking of illegal herbage than writing songs...

    ...just listen to 'Bike'...

Learning to play the guitar has opened me up to new music and made me re-appreciate the old stuff i always loved - but now do so with a little bit more respect for what went into it. I would certainly like to learn the tune in the link above - though i suspect i am some years from coming close (looking forward to the journey however)...

I dont think the wife can stand another living room performance of the DrB tour with 5 chords and 3 songs........

Gilmour is, to my mind, fantastic as he has a nice 'feel' to his playing and is also quite clean in technique. This means he can, as Clapton does, try to speak to you through the guitar. I don't know much about Floyd in the early years - but I do like Gilmours more recent solo ventures. If anyone has albums to recommend for xmas then please do so here.....

I saw Dave Gilmour perform Wish You Were Here live at Douglas Adams's Memorial Service. Although he is an Atheist, as Adams was, he didn't do what Dawkins did and take the opportunity to attack the religious proceedings.

In my opinion 70's Pink Floyd is the best.
Albums I think anyone would like are: Meddle, Animals, Wish You Were Here and Dark side Of The Moon.

As for overlooked guitarists, don't forget Iommi and Blackmore.

Yes, David Gilmour is one of the best. I saw him in 1972 doing Dark Side of the Moon and now there is a lot of stuff on You Tube - look at 'Comfortably Numb 1994 PULSE Earls Court'. Not only a great guitarist but songwriter, singer, showman, nice guy.

Oh, and the whole point of directing you to Comfortably Numb (which for some reason I forgot last night) is to point out the alien spaceship which makes an appearance at the end.

    How can you not believe?
