Lufthansa has advertisements at the moment offering flights from £49 to 'Europe'! So what do you get for your fifty quid - a guided tour of Heathrow Terminal 5?
Meh, it's no more silly than people talking about “Brittan and Ireland”. In colloquial English the name of the overall geographic region is often applied to the larger landmass and a distinction is drawn between that body, and smaller islands off of its coast.
Given the new consumer protection legislation the airline could get into quiet a bit of trouble if they were not offering flights to mainland Europe. These days it’s not enough for an advert to be truthful, they must also be (more or less) honest.
Which just goes to show how fluid regional names can be, and eth appropriate term and the meaning which will be taken from that term depend very much on context.
In context advertising “flights to Europe” is completely unambiguous, although an argument could be made for ambiguity if one ignored the context.
"Have we left Europe"
We can but dream......
When you visit other continents, like Asia or South America, the UK is seen as just another European country. You are made to feel much more 'European' than 'British'.
It is difficult to comprehend the bizarre attitude that still permeates this side of the channel, in the face of all the obvious geographical and political evidence, that we are somehow not part of Europe. Why Lufthansa, from a country that has never understood this weird attitude, should fall in with such nonsense is beyond understanding.
