Stephen Fry claims here that Douglas Adams told him why the answer to everything was 42, but of course it's a secret. Any ideas? I think Fry is having a joke.
I thought that when I read it. I also thought the whole article must be a joke - but it seems not!![]()
Can anyone see the flaw in the reasoning here? The radio series - which subsequently became both bestselling book, television series and film...
...
Ever since, speculation has been rife as to what Adams meant. There is the "paperback line theory" - 42 apparently being the average number of lines on the page of a paperback book. Was Adams paying homage to the medium of his success?
I think Adams just pulled the answer out of thin air.
It is funny because it is such an unexpectedly short answer for a fundamentally BIG question.
Fry is just keeping the mystery going. Everybody loves a mystery.
maybe the answer turns you insane and makes you flee to belgium? Its a possibility if the information is as profound as he claims![]()
"Oh, Belgium, man, Belgium!"
Belgium doesn't exist, though, so that can't be right
Hah! you are one of them I see.
"Typical of the Liberal Media, we have been inundated with pro-Belgium propaganda: Belgians' alleged superiority in the art of chocolate making;"
Give it up, Leftie. We have seen through your cunning plan
Steven Fry if you remember, lost the plot a while back and fled to belgium. I believe he was suffering from some sort of clincal depression. Thankfully he is now allgedly fully recovered.
Belgium was a euphemism from a sympathetic media: he went to Barking
No no, he was Barking.![]()
Sorry Janot. I was only teasing. I think he is very funny and very impressive, if truth be told
That's always been my thoughts as well. It doesn't need to mean anything, the whole point is that it's just a silly answer that no-one can understand because we don't know what the actual question is, and makes fun of people who think there really is some kind of simple answer to the meaning of life. It's possible he may have chosen 42 in particular because of some of the maths connections, but I think people are trying to read far more into it than is actually there.
