I recently came across this in "Quackwatch"
If you have happy thoughts, then you make happy molecules. On the other hand, if you have sad thoughts, and angry thoughts, and hostile thoughts, then you make those molecules which may depress the immune system and make you more susceptible to disease.
Apparently, it's a quite from Deepak Chopra. There is quite a lengthy article here .

Now, what do happy thoughts make.....................![]()
Well, I think there is no argument that happiness makes health - do we know how? Maybe Chopra's got a point. Have you got a better explanation? Has quackwatch?
Love, caring, dedication - and happiness? can do this! That's an amazing thing to happen to molecules!
Can anyone please translate this into English.

Hey! your post was headed "Happy thoughts=happy molecules" I just said maybe he has a point! I dunno actually. Please don't hit me with all his other stuff......not my fault!
Happiness can make people healthy - I don't know why. Do you?
Where's your beer? Had enough?I got quite a start to find you without it!

It's to do with hormones and biochemistry, such as levels of cortisol and adrenaline which vary with stress. There is also an extent to which happy people are more likely to spend time trying to be healthy, wherease unhappy people just don't care.
The "happy molecules" thing is almost kind-of right, but expressed very stupidly with a whole load of other crap which is totally meaningless.
I am your uk skep friend! I was simply interested in the idea of happy molecules that might be "almost kind-of right" as Araneus explained - thanks Araneus.
Your new avatar "becomes" you not because of the intellectual capacity (don't put yourself down) but because of the fine features, the gentle expression, the warmth of the smile, and the relaxed pose. Could I say more?
Your friend,
Hello.
Meant to post some time ago but...:-\
With reference to the titleI remember, from some time ago, an area of research regarding nervous system/immune system interactionsHappy thoughts=happy molecules
Trawling the net see http://www.personalityresearch.org/papers/beaton.html
Schizophrenia and the Immune System
There is a considerable amount of evidence that schizophrenic patients have longer healing times after major surgeries. A study investigated the levels of plasma interleukin in the blood of twenty-five control and schizophrenics during all stages of the surgery process of hemicolectomy and sigmoidectomy. Plasma IL-8 levels were significantly lower in the schizophrenic patients after surgery. Plasma cortisol concentrations were significantly lower during surgery for the schizophrenic patients as well. The conclusion of the study was that schizophrenic patients had a reduced ability for cytokine to fight inflammations. The reason for the findings could be explained by a schizophrenic's hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal dysfunction. The endocrine system has close interactions with the immune system (Kudoh, Sakai, Ishiria, & Matsuki, 2001[/FONT]).
Probably doesn't have any relevance to the stuff Chopra is dishing outHowever, an interesting avenue to explore nonetheless....On the other hand, if you have sad thoughts, and angry thoughts, and hostile thoughts, then you make those molecules which may depress the immune system and make you more susceptible to disease.
