You really do need to protect your computer from unwanted intrusions.
It doesn't have to cost money. A "multi-layered" approach is often recommended. If you are interested, have a look at...........

I just turn off javascript when I browse. I dont even use virus protection or a zone alarm etc. I have never had a virus or maleware either. I dont recommend that approach to everyone, I am rather familiar with my machine and do notice subtle changes in its behaviour.
When it comes down to it it's mostly just a matter of common sense. Don't visit dodgy sites, don't open suspect e-mails, don't click "OK" when your computer starts doing something you haven't told it to, don't leave all your security with "password" as the password. While some malware is getting more sophisticated and can do things automatically from seemingly good sites, the vast majority still needs you to tell it to do things.
The problem isn't the criminals, and fighting a constant battle with them isn't the answer. What we need is proper computer education and for people to take responsibility for their own actions. I think my favourite case was some virus (I forget it's name) a couple of years ago that managed to infect a few hundred thousand computers in about a week, The news was full of how terrible it was that people would do something like this and what a shocking thing viruses are, without a single mention of the fact that that was a few hundred thousand people who should have been fired for looking at porn at work.
We don't let people drive without a licence, but we let them have a computer, with potential for causing billions of pounds of damage, without even teaching them how to plug it in.
I use Linux. Malware, what's that?
I game and hate fiddlingI use Windows.
I also recommend to people that they ditch Internet Explorer and grab Firefox or Opera as a browser - much less vulnerable
