As a psychic myself, I've often found a reading can best convince people of the truth of the spiritual planes. How many skeptics have DARED to have a reading? You must know what will happen if the psychic is genuine, its happened too often that psychics have demonstrated they know things the could not possibly know otherwise.

I have - it's odd that when a skeptic (a real skeptic, not someone who just says "I'm skeptical") who knows how cold reading works has a reading, that psychics suddenly get everything wrong.

oh, and btw, I've not met anyone called Jackie or Sheryl and it's autumn now.
If you feel you can do better, what info do you need from me to give me a reading now?

Something to orientate my spirit guide (Mattca Alik He, the "wise man") to your spiritual location.
The best way to do this is for you to type out "Mattca Alik He" repeatedly (seven or more times) while saying the words to yourself, then post the resulting message.
This will allow Mattca to find you, however the reading might be a little vague.

He'll have to be clearer than that.
Orange, yellow - what do these mean?
M? Is that my name?
Trees - what about trees?
Eye? Well, I have two of them.
River - which one?
Fog - what fog?
Water - what does that mean? Water can be blue, green or brown.

I know my name is public knowledge on this site, so the "Does your name begin with M?" is a no-brainer.
No, I'm not wearing any yellow or orange.
My name does not relate to trees, unless you give trees pet names.
Define "near a river" - under 1 mile? Under 5 miles? It's hard to be far away from a river or stream in the UK.
No rocks or eye shaped windows near me - try again.
Define "near trees" - 100 yards? under 1 mile? Under 5 miles? It's hard to be far away from a tree in the UK.
You tell me which - blue or green.

If you dont mind me saying you seem to have an odd view about skeptics. Reading a little 'between the lines' your question about how many of us have dared to see psychics has a worrying undercurrent.
You assume that it is something we are scared of. Why? You also assume it is something we have not done. Why? In addition, you seem to think that skeptics just doubt everything for the sake of it - we do not. We are interested in scientific truths about the world - whatever they may be. There has been at least 60 years of research on psychic phenomena and there is no reliable evidence for it. Are you saying we are wrong to view the claims cautiously? Note also - that most skeptics are still actively involved in researching the possibilities - but we have not decided on the conclusions before the evidence is in.

If there is such a thing as a genuine psychic, they why do so many ask questions like "does this make sense" or "can you understand this"? Surely, if you're contacting spirits, or reading my mind, you'd be able to say "your name is xxx, you live at xxx and you have a pet cat called xxx".
Could it be that they're fishing for information?
A good example of "things they could not possibly know otherwise" is
"do you live near trees?"
"yes, I have a tree in my garden"
"you see, I knew that"
"wow, how did you know?"
If any psychic could walk up to me and immediately tell me my PIN or how much change is in my wallet, I'll listen, otherwise, it's just so much guesswork and retrofitting.

I have dared to have readings. In fact, I used to give them regularly, using tarot cards. I believed I had psychic abilities until I tested myself and realised the actual source of my information.
If a psychic was genuine, they would be able to give good clear information, not vague concepts, and the odd letter here and there. They would be able to identify information that they could not have received through body language, intuition, and at the worst, through research and collusion.

seren, you are a master of mystery.
lampost, fishpaste, chair, long division obviously refers to my childhood - only recently I was thinking about how my mum used to make fishpaste and cucumber sandwiches for me. In fact, I bought some Shippams Crab paste to see if I still liked it but it was horrid. She'd send me to school with the sandwiches, which is where the long division and the chair come in. The lamppost, I'm not so sure, unless that's a veiled reference to my favourite childhood books featuring Narnia.
Anyway, that first one is clearly me at school. And that's spot on, because I am in fact making a major decision about whether or not to go back to school. Obviously your spirit guide is aware of my dilemma and is trying to reassure me that it's a good thing. Therefore, I will go back to school. It is decided.
Where do I live. I live in a building with rooms it. The building is on a road. I can't fault you there, well done.
My eyes ARE browny green! And it's weird that you say 'turning' because I have chameleon eyes, they change colour depending on what I'm wearing and other factors. Bravo!

1 Your name retates to the earth or nature, or you identify with these concepts.Relates how? He lives on the Earth, he eats vegetables - to vague and open to interpretation
2 You live near a large, busy city. How far is far? - Too vague and open to interpretation
3 You have blue or blue/green eyes.Covers a lot of the population - Too vague and open to interpretation
4 You were/ are wearing orange, or bright colours.Your 'guide' said colours of the sunset, that can cover from clear blue through orange or even pink - bad interpretation and vague
5 You have a powerful computer of a wooden/ wood effect desk.As a techie - what's a powerful computer? My PDA is more powerful than what was used to put the Apollos on the moon - too vague and open to interpretation. A wooden or wooden effect desk - very common, hardly a prediction it's a near certainty
6 There are pens and/or other writing implements nearby.Pens! On a desk!! Who'd have thunk it - not a prediction, certainty
7 The walls are white or pale in colour and the floor is green or beige. Given the ongoing fashion for pale\neutral colours - not a prediction just playing the odds
8 There is a black plastic object on the desk.See above - it's a near certainty
9 On paper nearby are written the words "they" , "I", and "the".And they're uncommon words aren't they ::)
10 Its raining/ has rained recently.*cough* http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/
11 Recently you either ate or saw potatoes and peaches. Potatoes?! Are you serious - they're a staple and with the 'recently in there it's a certainty
12 Recently you have seen the moon. What with it being night and all, and how long is 'recently?

I do actually have a question. How come Mattca Alik He speaks bad English?
I can understand how you might claim that he speaks English through your facility to speak English, but then he should speak English the way you do. If he doesn't speak English through your facility to do so then I would have thought that his English would either be good due to his being a spirit and able to take in information, or archaic due to his learning it a very long time ago, or he'd speak a different language entirely due to dying before English evolved. But bad English I don't get.

Your name retates to the earth or nature, or you identify with these concepts.
My name derives from the Roman god of war.
You live near a large, busy city.
Who doesn't in the UK? You're also never more than 60 miles away from the sea.
You have blue or blue/green eyes.
65% of people in the UK have blue eyes. Both are very common in the UK and Europe.
You were/ are wearing orange, or bright colours.
My "fashion" sense is well documented on this board and also elsewhere on the internet. It only takes 2 minutes of Google to find that out.
You have a powerful computer of a wooden/ wood effect desk.
At home or work?
There are pens and/or other writing implements nearby.
That's like saying "there's a road and cars are nearby"
The walls are white or pale in colour and the floor is green or beige.
Traditional colours and very much in fashion nowadays.
There is a black plastic object on the desk.
Actually, no.
On paper nearby are written the words "they" , "I", and "the".
In what order and what context?
Its raining/ has rained recently.
You are aware that it's autumn in the UK aren't you?
Recently you either ate or saw potatoes and peaches.
I dislike peaches and haven't eaten them for years. Potatoes are a commonn food, so I'm not giving you that. It's like saying "you breathed recently".
Recently you have seen the moon.
I also think that my hobby is well mentioned on this forum. No dice.
If this is the best that M.A.H. can do, I suggest you sack him and get a new guide - he's not very good and far too vague to be of use.

MISS - Who d'you think I am, the Bad Homeopath?

MISS - grey carpet

HIT - I'd have been more impressed if Mattca Alik had got "people-oriented, task-centred management culture", but then he probably didn't know what it meant either :)

Recently you either ate or saw potatoes and peaches.

Recently you have seen the moon.
HIT - My daughter points it out to me at bedtime every evening.

If I were to say "I am getting an image of someone.....i see hair, a face, two legs....etc" and offerred this to someone as evidence all i have really done is describe a human - not a specific person.
The problem with information like this is its all categorical and exists at the supraordinate rather than subordinate level (i.e., a fruit vs apple). Herein lies the problem. It seems that psychic ability hides in the vagueness of language.

I bow to the Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names, which says it's Old Norse. (Reference from http://www.regia.org/languag.htm).
Either way, it's a still "hit" - as you say, the trick is to subsume as many levels of meaning as possible into the language of a reading, and then let subjective validation do the rest.
BTW, is "supraordinate" in your last post actually superordinate (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=superordinate)?

The predictions explained-
Your name retates to the earth or nature, or you identify with these concepts.
What does this mean?
It's another superficially impressive lucky dip job - with a surprisingly high probability of a hit.
Doc, you're a hit on that one - your surname means 'Broad Meadow'!
I thought it meant wooded clearing....but i bow to your expertise on this one
I bow to the Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names, which says it's Old Norse. (Reference from http://www.regia.org/languag.htm).
Either way, it's a still "hit" - as you say, the trick is to subsume as many levels of meaning as possible into the language of a reading, and then let subjective validation do the rest.
BTW, is "supraordinate" in your last post actually superordinate (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=superordinate)?
sorry :-[
Not at all - you are quite right, my fingers cannot type and the speed my brain would ideally like.......
If you look at normal conversations - we improve our clarity at the subordinate level "pass me an apple" says more than "pass me that fruit". The problem is getting self-claimed psychics to stick to this more usual level of information and clarity. I know why of course, being vague in this way improves their chances of a hit because vague information can be made to fit anything (as we can see above O0)
Interestingly, patients can show different deficits in processing at the different subordinate / superordinate levels which can be independent of each other. I wonder if psychics have hyper-excitation in superordinate representational systems? I feel an experiment coming on.......

Mattca has trouble typing since he must control my hand. He is capable of communicating perfectly to me, but only when the passage between dimensions allows it. Therefore it is easier to let him have control of my hand, even though the barrier he can make sense, it's just he can't delete mistakes or move the mouse, and the clarity of his control varies.

Your name retates to the earth or nature, or you identify with these concepts.
My name derives from the Roman god of war.
Which is also a planet much like the earth.
You live near a large, busy city.
Who doesn't in the UK? You're also never more than 60 miles away from the sea.
you live within a few miles from its centre.
You have blue or blue/green eyes.
65% of people in the UK have blue eyes. Both are very common in the UK and Europe.
then thats almost a 50% 50% chance. Did Mattca get it right?
You were/ are wearing orange, or bright colours.
My "fashion" sense is well documented on this board and also elsewhere on the internet. It only takes 2 minutes of Google to find that out.
Then he was right?
You have a powerful computer of a wooden/ wood effect desk.
At home or work?
At home I think, though Mattca didn't make it clear.
There are pens and/or other writing implements nearby.
That's like saying "there's a road and cars are nearby"
Any unusual "writing implements?"
The walls are white or pale in colour and the floor is green or beige.
Traditional colours and very much in fashion nowadays.
So he was right?
There is a black plastic object on the desk.
Actually, no.
Maybe there usually is?
On paper nearby are written the words "they" , "I", and "the".
In what order and what context?
Some notes, in the order given.
Its raining/ has rained recently.
You are aware that it's autumn in the UK aren't you?
But the rain was unusually heavy?
Recently you either ate or saw potatoes and peaches.
I dislike peaches and haven't eaten them for years. Potatoes are a commonn food, so I'm not giving you that. It's like saying "you breathed recently".
But you saw or thought about them right? Maybe Mattca picked up on your dislike?
Recently you have seen the moon.
I also think that my hobby is well mentioned on this forum. No dice.
Then that is what Mattca was refering to.
If this is the best that M.A.H. can do, I suggest you sack him and get a new guide - he's not very good and far too vague to be of use.
How can he know of computers and plastic, but not have access to weather reports?
He's one of the best guides I've known.
He is very wise, and knows what he sees. He has been learning for millenia.

Yes. Follow the instructions in the beginning of this thread (say and type Mattca's name seven times,) and then post the questions you want answering.

OK, I'll play. These will be the instructions you meant, I suppose:
The best way to do this is for you to type out "Mattca Alik He" repeatedly (seven or more times) while saying the words to yourself, then post the resulting message.

No - you only have the impression of alienation from your own thoughts. There is nothing here that counts as 'knowing' in terms of your so-called reading, so may be you are basing that on something else (something more impressive?).
If I say, I have been told you have a brain - I am, of course correct - but that does not mean this 'knowledge' was passed to me in any spiritual way. There is no criteria on which to be wrong with a meaningless claim like that so it is, by definition, not correct, but meaningless

What an interesting little game! Mattca Alik scored as follows:
the blue of deep skies
The mug was dark blue, about the colour of a Chelsea strip.
Half a hit.
It is of the yellow sun
The mug was plain white.
Miss.
Silver, like the stars
This was a plastic disposable translucent cup, of the sort you get on water coolers.
Half a hit.
I see no cup
This was a catch trial, with no drinking recepticle of any kind present on the desk.
Hit [although there was a guessable clue to this fact in the manner I phrased the preceding post, of course]
The writing is as of blood
The mug was light cream, and the writing on it was pink - a shade I suppose you might call 'coral'.
Half a hit.
2.5 out of five :P
Or if you're mean >:( it's zero out of five
Or if you're generous :D it's four out of five
Encouraging, though.
PsySpi, we seem to have established a technique whereby your claimed ability appears to be capable of functioning. Do you agree?
As you no doubt know, we skeptics like our proof in a form which allows for numerical analysis, and is conducted under controlled repeatable circumstances. We're sad like that.
Are you willing to repeat this exercise on a pre-arranged date, conducted using a similar technique but subject to a pre-agreed set of conditions? I believe we could devise a simple protocol which would establish the extent to which Mattca Alik's observations exceed what would be expected by chance.

But plane as in "dimensional plane" would be derived from "flat" (as in the dimensions are like the flat strata in a rock prehaps) and trans as across also works, since it relates to crossing over into the spirit planes.
Therefore, prehaps more accurately a transcryptoplaneologist is "one who studies the hidden planes alongside (across from) ours."

Hi PsySpi,
What sort of conditions and protocol do you plan?
Further to my suggestion of a couple of days ago, here is my proposal:
I will obtain four mugs, each of a different colour. I'll make sure that the colours are very clearly distinct from each other, so there can be no confusion. Each mug will have a simple one word description of the colour (example "blue"), and I'll post a list of what these are. I'll even provide a picture of the mugs, if you like.
I will speak nicely to some mods, and ask them to set up a hidden thread which only I can open.
You and I agree in advance a time when we can both be online and available. At this time we will perform an agreed number of trials (I suggest 20), in much the same way as we did above. We'll start a new thread for this purpose. I recommend that we run some test trials first (just to make sure Mattca Alik is playing ball).
Each Trial will proceed as follows:
1. I will select at random which of the four mugs will be present at the normal place on my desk, or whether there will be no mug present at all (equal chance of each).
2. I will post the result of this random selection in the hidden thread, and then invoke Mattca Alik in the usual way in the public thread.
3. You will post the reply Mattca Alik gives you in the public thread. The only words in this reply which will count are one of the four stipulated colours, or the phrase "no cup". If more than one of these phrases are present, the first one posted will count. If none are present, the trial is unsuccessful.
4. Other posters are welcome to supply their guesses as to the colour if they like.
5. After you have posted Mattca Alik's reply, I will immediately proceed to the next trial (so it won't take too long).
After all trials have been completed, the hidden thread will be made public.
How does that sound?

The trial sounds fine, though some questions- what colours will the mugs be? Since Mattca tends towards cryptic and poetic answers they need to be distinct enough that I wont make a mistake decoding them into the allowed answers.
"No cup" is fine for when their is no cup. Red, Blue, White and Black would probably work best. For comparison, a line up of "nature" colours, green, yellow, brown, grey would be hardest to decode.

Psychics, however genuine they may feel themselves to be (and I doubt it here), seem to have an aversion to proving their ability! :-\
Jocky, I'm still rather busy but I'll set up the interactive testing system that lends itself to this type of live test as soon as I can. i.e. a matter of a couple of weeks or so.
It cannot, by its very nature, be a transparent system, but it will be good enough for initial testing and could work as a screening method to assess anyone who wishes to be tested. O0
Jocky
14th November 2006, 09:21 AM
Thanks, John.
A screening system was exactly what I had in mind. IMO, we should be ready to give those who claim psychic ability a fair chance to demonstrate that their powers are genuine. Setting up FTF tests is time-consuming and expensive, so having a way of running a preliminary trial cheaply and quickly could turn out to be handy. If the powers don't work under such circumstances, it is unlikely to be worthwhile organising a full-scale test.
I share your skepticism about PsySpi. All I can say is:

PsySpi! Hurrah! Good to see you O0
Please forgive my cynicism, but as you are probably aware many people who claim abilities of this kind are not keen on trials of any kind. Kudos to you for having confidence in your claim O0 IMO, anyone who makes a paranormal claim and is willing to stand by it when asked to demonstrate under controlled conditions deserves considerable credit, regardless of the outcome.
Of course, a brief online trial like this cannot be said to prove anything conclusively in itself - but a positive outcome would be evidence indicating to me that your ability is worth exploring in more detail.
I speak personally here, not on behalf of UKS - but I would have thought that if you can identify the colour of the cups at a rate significantly greater than chance then organising a more formal FTF experiment could be worthwhile.
OK, I've got the cups ready (actually not all in the same place today but I'll sort that by tomorrow).
As soon as John's feet touch the ground enough to allow him to sort out the hidden thread, we're on. We need to start talking about a mutually convenient time - something like between 5 and 6 on a Monday or Tuesday, or possible a weekday lunchtime between 1 and 2 would be good for me. How about you?

Near an eye shaped window or rock?
