I do in fact have a bet* with a frind of mine that Carlisle will get into the Champion's League before Gretna do. I think I could be onto a loser here, what with Gretna playing in Scotland...


On the other hand I did well on this season's bet: a Grimsby supporter, a Barnet supporter and I have an arrangement that whoever's team finishes highest gets bought a pint by each of the other two. I should be able to collect my winnings this afternoon (although I'm prepared to go double or quits with the Barnet guy ;) ).

On a slightly different topic

As a high mileage commercial driver I notice a huge variation in drivers ability to pilot their metal boxes.

This manifests particularly in an ability to think ahead in order to keep the traffic flowing rather than inconvenience veryone else by making monumental errors of judgement.

Examples

1 The retrospective indicator
2 The position diagonally across the road when making a right hand turn
3 The fill all the available space on the yellow diagonal striped square
4 The 360 turn attempt that is 6 ft short of the turning radius for the vehicle
5 The travel 360 degrees of a roundabout in the nearside lane with no indicator.

I am sure that you find even more examples.

I suspect that this is not just poor hand to eye co ordination but one of a lower mental processing power.

I note with some joy that these drivers are now carrying a warning device to make them visible to other road users so that we can make the needed adjustments to their lack of ability.

This takes the form of one or two white flags containing a red cross mounted on the side of the car above roof height
