The International Astronomical Union voted to create a new class of "Dwarf Planet", to include Pluto, Ceres, and other asteroids and Kuiper belt objects.

Way overdue in my opinion.

I told you so!

Oh wait, I never did. In fact, this is news to me.

So does this have any impact on astrology?

I guess it makes sense if larger objects have been discovered. It's easier to drop Pluto as a planet than to include all the others.

The effects on Astrology will be huge!! :o

"I see a tall, dark stranger in your future" could actually mean "you have an inability to recognise a scam" with Pluto out of the equation.

Perhaps we should start a reinstate Pluto campaign for the sake of the science of Astrology.

Just a bit of clarification here, chaps.

Surely the term planet is inclusive of the term 'dwarf planet'.

Why demote? ???

I didn't know this until a few days ago but Pluto is actually smaller than our moon.

Speaking of the moon, have you noticed that the moons of all the other planets have their own names? ours is just called......moon, very boring, why don't we get The International Astronomical Union to give our moon a proper name.

Isn't our moon called Luna, or Moon?

It was the first one we observed, so presumably when other moons were spotted, we said "oh, it's another one of those Lunas! Let's call this one X,Y,Z," then 'moon' as the translation for Luna, just became the name of that type of body.

Our moon is called Moon with a capital 'M', so that is its name. It's a moon called Moon.

Why not call them "Micky Mouse Planets"?

I'll get my coat.

Dwarf planets aren't in the premier league because they haven't cleared their orbits of debris. Ceres (and possibly Vesta and Pallas, jury's out on those two) is a dwarf planet because it shares it's orbit with thousand of other chunks of rock. Pluto is demoted, supposedly, for similar reasons.

As for the Moon, Teek's right, capital M. Plus it's also known as Luna and Selene. Study of the Moon is known as Selenology.

Mojo, I'm surprised you took it off! :P

Guess the quote:
"I prefer one moon, that way, you know what to call it; 'the moon'"

Official - the planet formerly nicknamed as Xena (2003UB313) has now officially been named as Eris and it's moon, formerly Gabrielle, is now called Dysnomia.

Also, Pluto, along with Eris and the asteroid Ceres, are officially dwarf planets

From http://messagenet.com/myths/ppt/_e1003.html#Eris-1

Eris

The goddess of Discord or Strife; she is the daughter of Nyx (Night); the sister and companion of the god of War, Ares.

The children of Eris are:

5: Dysnomia (Lawlessness)
