Turned on my digital TV box to see the message "1 new channel added". "What new goodies can I watch", I thought. No, actually I thought "I bet it's another bloody shopping channel". No, worse ...

mobilizer -- LAUNCHING SOON -- FANTASTIC NEW CHANNEL FEATURING TXT FACTOR WHERE YOU GET TO RATE 100S OF GORGEOUS GIRLS & GET PICS OF YOUR FAVOURITE SENT TO YOUR MOBILE PHONE

(Capitalisation is as reproduced above.)

Yep, that's right ... bandwidth in our Freeview airspace is going to be used for yet another stunt to get mobile phone users to buy premium rate services!

And I was actually feeling rather cheerful to hear that Channel 4 is ditching Big Brother (though I expect it will re-appear on five).

Trinoc, I know you will thank me for this. You can watch the
Big Brother highlights from the last ten years

here. Has it really been ten years? I've never actually seen it.

It's a joke. The "Highlights" last just over one minute. Surely not!

It would be far better if they scrapped a few of the sillier Freeview channels to make room for a HD channel, possibly shared between main broadcasters.

Two more just now ... a new shopping channel and something called "Babestation" ... no description yet, but it says it starts at 1AM so from the name I think we can guess.

You should get Sky, every other channel turns into a 'babestation' later at night. Texting in to get some young lady to show her bum to the camera, ah, the wonders of technology.

No need to pay for anything. If you forget to switch off after one of the Star Trek themed evenings on Virgin 1, you'll find yourself watching Sexcetera ... a blatant excuse to show lots of tits and bums and pretend it is a sociological documemtary. If you can watch more than about 5 minutes without getting bored to death, you are dead already.

Don't expect television to get better, pal, I'm not on the air anymore.

They're certainly trying hard to demonstrate the thesis that there's a direct but inverse relationship between quantity and quality.

It's only logical, really. There's just so much advertising revenue to go round, so the more channels there are, the less each gets. So the channel owners are in a desperate race to see who can attract the most punters while spending the smallest possible sum on programmes.

I'm surprised people haven't taken this to its logical conclusion and set up a "home porn movies" channel for viewers to send in their amateur efforts for no fee. Or have they? (I wouldn't know, still being blissfully limited to four terrestrial channels for the next few months).

There is a place where people provide amateur (in all senses of the word) efforts for free in just about every field ... it's called the Internet.

Yes, Tony. The source of home-made porn is right there at your fingertips.8-)

I've heard this also, although I have no personal experience of it myself. Honest Guv, I didn't go to that site, I must have lent my computer to someone and they downloaded it, honest.

It seems my wish is being granted! The Freeview retune on Wednesday that they keep taking about will allow for BBC and ITV Freeview HD channels! Starting in December ...

Now all I need is a HD TV!

And a new DVB-T2 High Definition Freeview box, which isn't available yet! Also, I need to wait until analogue signals are turned off in my area. :undecided:

In my area I can only get the four standard channels, but switchover is due by the end of the year.

I'm contemplating getting a Freeview dish to pre-empt the phased changeover; that seems to come with more channels also (although I am well aware that quantity does not equal quality). I'm not sure which would be better for HD - any comments?

One thing I will not do is contribute anything to Murdoch, so no Sky...>:-)
