My sister's friend is over here from the USA on a student visa, she just got a first in graphic design and typography and is going to have to go back to the states if she can't get a job with a company willing to sponsor her visa.
It's a long shot but I said I'd put the feelers out, just in case anyone happens to know of anywhere that would be interested.
She's a very nice girl and a skeptic too (and her dad knows Shermer if that's a help :D)

Don't know if it'll do any good, but my step-brother is an art editor for a big magazine publishing company. I have no idea how much power/influence he has, but I can ask.

I'll have a word with a few people I know and ask if they're recruiting.

Ok I think i need to do a course on this. I want a well paid IT job, (well paid meaning over 16k) what qualification would someone need to be able to do this?

Well that was the fastest he's ever responded to an email from me!
Apparently they aren't taking on any art staff for the foreseeable future, but if she's interested in a position as a sales or marketing trainee.......

I'll ask her, thanks for that.
And hey, if he ever needs a freelance copywriter or marketing consultant, I know a great woman with a background in newspapers and magazines ;D

Unfortuneately IT covers a lot; networking, programming, databases, support, deployment, QA are but a few all of which have their sub-categories :( Your best bet is to
a) Have a look at some of the specialist IT recruitment sites to find out what's wanted
b) From that range learn what you feel most comfortable with
c) Remember that during the interview for programmers they'll often ask a really difficult question, don't be afraid to answer "Google it". Often that's the correct answer
Programming wise I believe what's wanted at the moment is Java, .NET and C# but your mileage may vary. As for the 16K up here (Cobham) we're paying 16K for a helpdesk starter, getting in low on the ladder for a year means you can get to know the Company and ask the developers "What should I study?" ;)
