Hello! I followed a link from the JREF forum and ended up here - nice to see a UK sceptics forum :)

I look forward to lots of sceptical, with a 'c', discussion, without interruption from Johnny Foreigner.

Oh, except it's the UK Skeptics board...

Anyway, hullo.

Hi, Nucular.

And welcome.

It's still early days yet, but I think we're heading in the right direction.

Oh, except it's the UK Skeptics board...

Not in the Interesting Ian sense though. ;) ;D

We used Skeptic rather than Sceptic because:

Skeptic is internationally recognised.
It gets far better results with search engine placement and search results.
Which leads to more incoming links etc.

Points 2+3 being the most important.

Nucular
15th March 2006, 06:24 PM
Ah, I see - that makes sense ???

I guess if II did drop by, it'd make for an interesting discussion...

Certainly looks as if everything's heading in the right direction :)

The JREF forum seems to be having technical trouble. I can view it if I'm not logged in, but as soon as I log in I get a "There seems to have been a problem with the JREF Forum database" message.

If anyone does manage to log in successfully there, could they post something about this in Forum Help, please?

Admin
21st March 2006, 12:48 PM
It's been a bit hitty-missy for the last couple of days. It's still down by the looks of it.

Database connection errors usually result in an email being generated and sent to the forum admin.

Mojo
21st March 2006, 12:51 PM
Quite odd: when logged in I can view the main index page, statistics, members lists etc, but not the sub forums or posts, which I can see if not logged in.

And I've just found a nice feature on this board: when I tried to post that last message, it told me that while I was typing there had been a reply that I might want to read before posting.

I'd like to say that one of the reasons I am a lurker at the JREF is that I'm not a scientist and I have no expertise in any particular topic.

Due to the forum there being so large, I'm always hesitant to chime in with my take on something, because there's always someone more knowledgeable than me, and I tend to be shy.

I'm hoping to dip my toe in a tad here, if that's ok.

Hi Guys,

better introduce myself. I'm a former molecular biologist (I jacked in my PhD to go and work in the film industry) now pretending to be a computer scientist at the university in Cardiff. At my previous place of work I was always the guy who would reply to the dear-all email warning about glutamate (or whatever the scare of the week was) with the relevant link snopes.com . After four years of that I wasn't the only one who would shoot down things like that so I must have had a little bit of an effect.

Anyway it's really nice to have a skeptical hang-out in the UK. It'll give me another excuse not to do any work.

Welcome, Huw.

Molecular biologist , eh ? Whereabouts ? (I spent 14 years working at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory - 12 years in Heidelberg, 2 years at the Genome Campus in Hinxton, near Cambridge - just a mile up the road from where I now live). My background is comp science, not molecular biology.

And I worked at the University of Cardiff for a short while in the mid-1970's. We had to schedule a 4 Mbyte exchangeable disk drive to be mounted for an hour at a time. Those were the days - ICL System 4's running Multijob (which we termed Multiflop). Ask around if anyone still remembers them. Later replace by Multics (woohooo!!!)

Yeah, OK then. We are going back quite a few hundred years ::) but certainly Shetland has a distinctive cultural identity.

They get to be Scots too though - two for the price of one :) or three if you count 'British' too.

Righter, do you get to take part in that ultimate expression of Norse identity, the boat-burning festival (?Uphellyah? - forgive incorrect spelling of the name).

IIRC it used to be for Shetland-born folk only, but they expanded it to cover all residents.

my husband stewards the acts...that is scoops them off the floor and shoves them on stage...i serve supper.

I think the Lerwick (capital)lot, is stricter about squads being from shetland...but not the local festival.

the drinking is done over several days...so you can see it`s a serious business.

I took part in them for a few years running during the early-90s. I was a member of one of the largest dark ages re-enactment groups and the trip up to York was always a fun one and one of the most understanding police forces we'd met :)

It wasn't clear and sunny every day. We had two warm, humid days with an overcast.

I had as good a time as one gets from work travel, and I had way more food than is good for me. The people I was with were very keen on maxing out their expenses every day and that seemed to mean masses of food. Any alcohol consumed was purely incidental.

Thanks for the welcome O0

Think of me more of a woman with cats - I do also have a dog, but DogWoman doesn't quite have the same ring to it ;D

In that sense of Catwoman, I am Catman! That has a bit of a ring to it too ...

Hello Bindeweede and welcome.

I have not read that book but I can imagine the sorts of things it covers. I would recommend "Why people believe weird things" by Shermer and "Flim Flam" by Randi for other good reference examples of these texts O0

Well, I recently finished reading "Why people believe...", and it was an impressive read, especially for my non-scientifically trained, and definitely non-brilliant mind. I did find myself skipping the odd paragraph when the author went in to the details of the American legal system in relation to the teaching of Creationism, and the section "Dr Tipler Meets Dr Pangloss" was a bit above my head!
The section which probably had most efect on me was "Twenty-five Fallacies That Lead Us to Believe Weird Things" - a list of common errors in logical thinking. But I would recommend the book to anyone who has not already read it.

I might move on to something by Randi, only having read a few articles I downloaded from his site. "FlimFlam" is quite an old publication now, I think, although I don't suppose some of the tricks he might describe will have changed much. But we now have the glories of Psychic TV and the internet , of course.

I wonder if anyone else can recommend a book they were impressed by - in relation to threads in the forum.

What about a "Recommended Reads" thread? (I hope I'm not suggesting something that already exists.)

We're one step ahead with this. We'll soon have our own on-line skeptics' book store with books reviewed by fellow skeptics. O0

It should be a great resource once it builds up.
