OK, world cup fever is upon us :D

Well me anyway :-[

So what are our chances?

Are we going to win?

Do the Scots, northern Irish, and the Welsh support England? ???

Does anyone care? :o

It's sport but I think it's great O0 time to let logical fallacies and unabashed jingoism rule your brain. ;D

Who needs skepticism? Closed-minded eejuts! ;D

No, probably not.
This does not compute.Danger, Will Robinson, danger!

Well we're second favourites, which is rare, so maybe.

Personally, I think not, because England are generally a bit rubbish.

I think we've got a fair chance of doing well. We've got a really good team atm. O0

My love, everyone I know says the exact same thing every World Cup and every Euro Championship too.

I'd be happy if we got to the finals, let alone win. 50p says we get to the semis but no further.

Set of overpaid self absorbed nancy boys who fail to deliver when challenged at a higher level.

Would not know a decent days work if it bit them on the leg.

I shall be going shopping in the deserted streets of Leeds with Mrs Aardvark

Ps, secretly, I hope they do well and make us all proud, but I am very sceptical

The streets of Glasgow are deserted because everyone's down at the pub, gazing with saucer eyes at the Big Screen World Cup Action. Quite spooky, really. Feels like the prelude to the extraterrestrial invasion... :scared:

It's a gorgeous sunny day - I've just got back from the park - I'm heading out there again with my kite.

It's deserted - everyone is at home or in the pub watching 22 men kick a bag of wind around - on a day like this!

Mad people. :D

Still, it means I get the park to myself.

We set off at 2.00pm to do some shopping, all roads were quiet, city centre was quiet

When we got back to our favourite local butcher he had sold out of every home made sausage, burger, kebab, you name it. They are going to have to work on Sunday to make up enough stuff for Monday and to restock their own freezer.

Grteat Butcher though, even knows the farms where his meat is reared, I dare say he knows the names of the actual cows and pigs he sells

We had to have BBQ Salmon and what meat we had in the freezer

I think it would be interesting to find out how many of us skeptics are footie supporters or not.

Not too sure, but is there some option to start a poll?

Admin
11th June 2006, 10:11 AM
Yes you should be able to start a poll.

There should be a button with "+POLL" on it which will start one.

If not it means I haven't got the option set - I'll check...

I think it would be interesting to find out how many of us skeptics are footie supporters or not. Depends on how you define "supporter". Does it include someone whose interest extends only to going down the pub to watch the World Cup, someone who looks for the results of a particular team in the papers on Sundays, someone who actually goes to the occasional game, those who have season tickets for home games, or just those nutters who insist on going to virtually all their team's games?

Sven's usual policy of pulling everyone back in the second half if we have a lead at half-time. The one that loses us matches if we try it against any team better than Paraguay's.

Eriksson must go!

Oh, right, he is going...

Do the Scots, northern Irish, and the Welsh support England?

Personally, I do - I find the whole anti-English thing a rather depressing part of the Scots national identity. Rivalry's fine - but cheering on Paraguay just because you've got a chip on your shoulder about history is a bit much.

I'd back the Welsh or the Irish (any flavour) against England though. Celtic solidarity (or something)

I'm a vague football follower, watch important internationals but don't follow club games (apart from checking the papers for Stirling Albion's results in Scottish Division 2).

I prefer cricket and rugby, though.

Oleron
14th June 2006, 12:11 PM
I have grown used to backing England over the last few world cups because NI never bleedin qualify anymore! Most Ulster people back England (well, half of them anyway!).

However, as Mojo says, if Sven doesn't change his policy of tring to defend 1-0 leads (Italian -style football) then they will get battered by any of the tournament favourites. England work well when they are pressing for goals.

Will they win? Not this time chaps... :'(

My tip to win is Argentina because they are strong in all areas of the pitch and cheat like crazy....

Admin
14th June 2006, 07:17 PM
Well I watched Brazil last night and they were very underwhelming ???

Argentina did look quite good though.

I agree though about Sven's tactics. Sitting back and defending a lead is not the way to do it unless you have a rock solid defence - we don't.

We should get through to the second phase OK but we'll see how we handle things when the going gets a little tougher. ???

When i proposed this i never thought it would be so difficult until i read Mojo's post.

I've been thinking about it for days now and can't come up with a simple solution.

If England can avoid Germany in the 2nd round they are likely to bump into Holland in the quarter finals.

So a valiant exit at the QF stage again?

Apologies for the familiar tone of the following piece but i take no credit for it at all, having received this from someone at work today.

Our Father, whose heart's in football,
Hallowed be thy game.
Thy England come,
Thy will be won,
In Berlin, as it was at Wembley.
Give us these weeks our seven wins.
And prevent us from injuries,
As we save from those, who take penalties against us.
And lead us not out of the tournament,
But deliver us from Brazil.
For thine is the Lampard,
The Gerrard,
and the Terry,
For Beckham and Rooney.
Owen.

Obviously this was composed before the events of yesterday. :-[ :-[

He won't be playing again this year and it will take a lot to for him to build up his muscles. After a knee injury, muscle bulk is lost quite rapidly.

I saw it happen, looked to me like his Medial Collateral Ligament that got busted, may also have taken out his Posterior Cruciate Ligament as well. I am no expert but I have had knee trauma and surgical intervention. Let's see what the papers say on Friday.

Bloody Germans got through. >:(

Come on Mexico. O0

Why do they have to constantly show Maradona over and over again when Argentina play? A fat little moron waving his sweaty shirt around.::) It gets on my wick. >:(

And, why do they have to keep showing people's reaction from outside whenever a goal is scored? Like when England score they have to show the reaction in Manchester, the reaction in London, the reaction in Newcastle, the reaction in Bristol...

IT'S ALWAYS THE FECKIN' SAME. Cheering and waving flags.

What do they think people are going to do, start creosoting their pets?

Now that would be silly as creosote is carcinogenic, my advice would be to go with a water based coating like cuprinol Ducks Back, clearly designed with this application in mind, it does what it says on the p.e.t. receptacle. ;D

Was the ref being paid by the card?

Actually, this may be a bit unfair to him as the bookings that resulted in sendings-off all seemed fair, but he seemed to lose control of the match a bit.

Although we gave 100% effort after Mr. Potato Head got himself sent off, we never looked likely.

And penalties. Again they were ALL so poorly taken.

Overall a very disappointing world cup.

I can't remember who said it but they said that Eriksson has somehow managed to take a load of really talented players and mold them into a very ordinary team.

I want to hit someone now. >:(
