The latest feature on the UKS website is the new book store. It's a fairly large (and will keep growing) collection of books that will be of particular interest to skeptics and those who prefer books to be educational, factual and informational.

There's a shopping cart system so you can buy more than one at a time ;) and the payment method is secure (currently PayPal).

See: UK-Skeptics' Book Store (http://www.ukskeptics.com/reviewed_books.php)

We're served by a professional book company and books will be delivered directly from their stock so service will be good and swift.

For more general books/DVD/etc. purchases we still have the Amazon store: http://www.ukskeptics.com/bookstore.php

And a direct affiliate link: Direct link to Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2F&tag=ukskeptics-21&linkCode=ur2&camp=1634&creative=6738).

There's also an Amazon affiliate search page on this forum which can be used too: http://www.ukskeptics.com/forum/amazon_store.php

Remember:

UKS is a not-for-profit organisation and any proceeds received will go into the UKS account and can only be used to fund UKS activities. O0

Hi John,

Re Skeptics Bookstore

I need to buy my OU textbook(s) - how can I do that through UK Skeps Bookstore - I see most books are Prometheus there? But it's avaliable on Amazon. In May I bought a book via here from Amazon - can't see how I get to Amazon from the link in this thread - or perhaps when I woke up this morning Mrs Stupid was inhabiting my brain! :-[

Also I need a calculator.

Two must-have books - just finished reading them last week and I can't say enough good things about them. A cracking read about people can become misled, deluded and follow the crowd.

Some new books added to the bookstore this morning, fresh from Prometheus...

The Haunted Observatory - Richard Baum

For anyone who thinks astronomy is a dry science, this review gives a flavour of what it's about;

'Every time Richard Baum opens astronomy's closet, unexpected and
dubious relics come tumbling out. Baum's haunting review of false trails and aberrant observations is, however, much more than a slate of astronomical anecdotes. He expertly referees the contest between perception and expectation and reminds us we still sometimes shadowbox with phantoms.' E C Krupp, Director, Griffith Observatory.

The Art Of Deception - Nicholas Capaldi & Miles Smit

Revised and updated, this is an effective introduction to critical thinking - coming from the unusual angle of teaching the reader how to develop skills of deception and manipulation, it teaches how to spot the fallacious and fuzzy logic of others.

Skepticism - An Anthology

A good introduction to philosophical skepticism with handy bite-sized chapters dealing with the thinking of many great philosophers from Plato to Popkin - fully referenced but not a dry or overwhelming read.

Intelligent Design

Sparked by the argument about teaching Intelligent Design alongside Evolution in American schools, the first 50 pages deal with the ensuing court case (2005) and is followed by chapters from a variety of thinkers discussing the scientific validity (or otherwise) of the ID theory. This is part of Prometheus' Contemporary Issues series, and whilst being appropriate to the American market, should still be read by skeptics worldwide.

You'll find these at the top of the first page in the Bookstore (http://www.ukskeptics.com/reviewed_books.php). Happy browsing!

So if I go to Amazon through that link a percentage of what I spend goes to UKS?

Yes. About 4% I believe. Not totally sure though.

Every little helps.:cheesy:

Just making sure.

Quite a lot of charities/ not for profit organisations benefit from linking to Amazon, I believe. I think Amazon is excellent, but I also want the little local bookshop to survive, so I do buy locally as well.

Do UKS still get a cut if you use Amazon marketplace? I tend to use the marketplace more than Amazon itself.

I can't see why not, but I do not actually know. Perhaps Melanie or John Jackson could clarify.

I think it all works if you go via the link. O0

4% does not seem much on a single item but it does multiply.

The Amazon affiliate link is proving a decent source of income for UKS so thanks to all who use it.

We've got just about enough money in the kitty now to start making good use of it with some new projects.

There's now also an affiliate Amazon link in the navigation bar above (Amazon Store) which can also be used to search Amazon for books or other items.

It links to this page: http://www.ukskeptics.com/forum/amazon_store.php

This should make ordering from Amazon a bit more convenient for regular forum users.

It works in exactly the same as the other Amazon links - it adds no cost to purchases but UKS gets a ~4% commission on sales.

TIP: I've left the initial search results showing up from the USA and prices in dollars as the search results seem to be better that way. If you then click on an item for purchase, it will convert it to pounds and take you to Amazon UK. O0

It's very important that you click on the link John provided that automatically takes you into the Amazon site. Keep page open at all times during your visit to the Amazon site. Open new tabs for all your browsing, when you are ready to purchase online, close down all your tabs and UKS page, reopen it and start at the link provided that you started out with on UKS, thus taking you directly to where you wish to purchase and from there proceed to check out. I did it this long route to ensure that UKS would benefit from my online purchases through UKS link to Amazon. The last time I tried to purchase through UKS on Amazon in December, UKS was unable to receive the 4% commission. By going the long route we succeeded. Hope this info helps! O0

Can I order books to the USA thru the uk skeptics page? Can I order anything amazon sells, or just the books listed on uk skeptics? I'm wanting to order books but would like UKS to get a commission if possible. Or if someone has a copy of bad science and (possibly a couple other books too) that they want to send to the USA, or someone is IN the USA, I can pay-pal it or mail a money order. Thanks!

Well I often order stuff from the American Amazon site for shipping here, it may get tagged for import duty though.

You can use this link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=ukskeptics-21&linkCode=sb1) for shopping for anything else you may want.
