Steve Fuller's written a play:

"Darwin becomes convinced by the end of the play that perhaps there is intelligent design in nature," Professor Fuller, who plays a sidekick to the talk-show host, told Times Higher Education.

He said the message of the controversial play, which is his first, is that society cannot rely on these icons of the 19th century to save it.

Science certainly doesn't rely on Darwin as an icon of the 19th century, and I don't really think society does either.


He expects the play to stir up Darwinists, even though its aim was not to "beat (the Darwinists) over the head" or argue that they had to believe in God. He said he was seeking to show that the evidence base Darwin had to work with had "really shifted a lot".

Shifted, maybe, especially with the discovery of how genetics work, but not towards ID.

I remember - fondly - cross-examining Prof Fuller at SitP about his "expert" evidence for the ID trial.

I had never seen such misconceived and incoherent "expert" evidence. Even within the "expert" report, certain important terms were used inconsistently. It was (in my opinion) a very shoddy job.

One blogger described it as seeing a semi-housetrained Rottweiler taking Prof Fuller apart. :smiley:

It just occurred to me that ID may mean something in the UK other than what it means in the USA. Here, it has been notorious for meaning "Intelligent Design" andwas coined by fundamentalist Christians to mean "Creation" without using that term. It was such a big deal here that I no longer think of "identification" when someone says ID.

Thanks, all. I had forgotten that Fuller was involved with Dover since I avoid philosophy like the plague. Also, I was not sure there was enough interest in ID outside the USA.

I remember that well. It was fine demolition job that you did of him. I enjoyed getting my own salvo in along the lines of "who here is shortsighted? Who has a bad back? Anyone had to have their wisdom teeth removed before they were kiled by them? Some design!"
