When you join this forum you will find that until you make your first post, features such as editing your profile, adding an avatar, the private messaging facility, etc., will not be available to you.
This is to prevent SPAM as many automated spambots do get past the security features and attempt to do things like PMing other members or filling out profile fields with SPAM links.
So all you need to do is make a posting or two, perhaps a quick hello in the welcome thread, and these features will be made available to you automatically.
Yes, it's a little inconvenient and a bit frustrating to new members, but since we have adopted these measures, SPAM has been virtually eliminated from the forum.

I uploaded an avatar after I'd posted but it hasn't shown up in any of my posts. Does the image need checking by Mods before going up?

How about viewing who is online?
Is that a privileged feature?
I can't seem to do it. ???

I see it on the bottom of the forum home page. I don't think I'm particularly priviledged.
What do you see?

When I click the link I get a message that I am not allowed to view this page.

The link to the forum home page?
http://www.skeptics.org.uk/forum/index.php
or the link at the bottom of that page to give more details about the currently active users?

I think you need to post 15 messages before getting full privileges (like posting URLs). Maybe this also applies to seeing the logged in members list.

CONSPIRACY! ;)
Thanks Trinoc. That explains it.
@Matt - I was trying to view who is online by selecting the link at the bottom of the home page -> currently active members

K - next question:
Is there a setting to change this?
After I hit 'submit reply' it defaults to show me my post at the bottom of the thread.
Can it be changed to go to the parent thread once posted?
I don't want to see my post after I send it - I use 'preview' to double-check details before posting (unless I'm drunk).
Example:
When I hit 'submit reply' to send this message it will then show me the post.
I would like it to go to 'Forum Admin and Features'
I do this on all my fave forums.
This one is growing on me.
This may be a bad thing for you in the long run. :cheesy:

I can't find an option for this. I knew I'd used this somewhere, but I think it was probably the SGU forum.
I just open each thread in a new tab (middle mouse button/wheel in Firefox), keeping the tab with the main list open, then I can just close the thread tab when I have no more use for it.

Guess I'll have to go with that. Thanks!

Arg! Very frustrating.
I use this feature a lot. I like to see who is online and what they are doing. Yet I am denied access to the coveted list of online members. :'(

Just one more suggestion
The forum has two different addresses.
http://www.skeptics.org.uk/forum/
and
http://www.ukskeptics.com/forum/ (http://www.ukskeptics.com/forum/)
Whichever you're using perhaps trying the other one might help. I'm told that sometimes there are problmes which affect one address but not other.

I hope you can't see what I am doing while online.::)
I've disabled my webcam so you can't see the worst of it. ^-^
I hope that thought doesn't disturb anyone to much. ;D:cheesy::-X

Have you tried Quick Links (top right of screen just below your name etc.) and then bottom of the list Who's Online? Might be worth a try.

I don't have 'Who's Online' as one of my quick link options.
Maybe the mods know my reputation and are just limiting me.

Once you have about 15 posts things should open up.

It's done on post count but it only updates once an hour. I can't remember what the limit is set at but it's only 3 or 5 posts - might even be 1.
