View Full Version : What's the explanation?

I'm not what you'd term "believer" although I am open minded about the existence of certain phenomena and I do hold dear the premise that everything physical that happens must have a physical explanation. Everything that we currently think is paranormal or unexplainable will eventually have a physical and viable cause for it to happen. This I know. However I would welcome your views as to what might have caused the following experiences.

1.I was in the bath one night as normal and suddenly the whole room went icy cold. I felt frightened for no good reason and I am not one to have panic attacks. The room also seemed to change somehow as if..glowing? But not exactly that it was just different somehow. There was a linen cuboard above the bath and to the right a bit, and as my fear reached it's peak the doors of the cuboard just creaked and fell off with an almighty clatter. There was nothing that could have caused that to happen as the doors were shut tight and the hinges were in good working order.

2. I was pregnant with my first child and staying temporarily in a womens hostel. One night I came home from my work and went to bed. The room became icy cold as I sat there reading and I felt (no kidding) the bed shake a little as if someone had sat down on it. There was a dent at the bottom of the bed as if someone was sitting there. What freaked me was that it stood up (apparently) and the bed shook and the dent disappeared and then it apparently sat down again, the bed shook and the dent reappeared.

3. When I was a small child - not even 5, I was able to open a locked door which had a bolt right at the top which was locked every night. One night my father caught me half way down the street and the door was unlocked and unbolted and wide open, yet my parents had as they did every night, made sure the door was locked and bolted and there was no chair or anything I could have stood on to unlock it. Any ideas anyone?

Where's the haunting experts? ;D

Did the doors really fall off or was that just a part of the experience?

The bed one could probably be explained by a hypnagogic/hypnopompic experience.

#3 - they may have forgotten to lock the bolt that night.

Speculation obviously, but there may be some worth in them.

Oh, and welcome Shirley. O0 8 posts and I haven't noticed you yet!!!

OH yeh the doors did actually fall off. I mean they could have fallen off for a good reason, that I don't doubt but what made it scarey was the fact that something wierd seemed to be happening in the bathroom when the doors decided this would be a good time to fall off and scare the hell outta the poor girl having a relaxing time in the tub.

Your explanations seem pretty good though I have thought of several things that could have caused these, my Dad thought the one in the hostel was something to do with an underground stream.

And thank you for welcoming me.

Just realised I didn't provide a link to the hypnagogia explanation. Here it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia

I think the most common form of this is where we start falling asleep and enter a state between being awake and being asleep. In this condition we can 'hallucinate' and see, hear, experience things that seem incredibly real (as we don't actually feel like we're not fully awake).

2 telltale signs of this are:

The person will be adamant that they were awake and that it couldn't possibly have been a dream-type experience;
After experiencing it, they just go back to sleep. So yes. After a monster/ghost/alien/whatever has visited them in their room, they roll over and go to sleep! ;D

This state is known to be real - it's not speculation.

As an explanation for any particular experience (especially those that occur in bed or while dozing in a chair) it's a good one but can only be a suggestion.

Wow.. that is amazing. I find it fascinating that the mind can fool itself like that. So what you are saying is that you can be dreaming but not actually asleep just sort of dreaming whilst you are awake?

Do you know... that makes the whole subject of reality very confusing doesn't it? I mean.. I had this idea once that.. well what if I'm actually insane in an asylum somewhere and hallucinating my normal life because of medication? I know it sounds daft but it actually screwed my brain for a little while lol.
